Marker to Maj. Daniel McCook, patriarch of the Fighting McCooks of Carrollton, Ohio. One of McCook’s sons, Brig. Gen. Robert McCook, had been killed after the Battle of Shiloh while riding in an ambulance. Robert was wounded at Shiloh and the report to Daniel was that Robert was unarmed in the ambulance and shot by guerilla Frank Gurley. In July 1863 when John Hunt Morgan was on his famous raid that went through Ohio, Dan McCook heard that Frank Gurley was riding with Morgan. Without telling his wife, he joined the Union pursuit, seeking revenge on Gurley. When the Yankee cavalrymen caught up with Morgan at the Battle of Buffington Island, Daniel McCook was mortally wounded in the fight. The marker is located 100 yards from where the elder McCook was shot. Photo by Andy Turner
