
Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Union Brig. Gen. Catharinus P. Buckingham was buried there in Woodlawn Cemetery in 1888. A graduate of West Point, Buckingham graduated four places behind Robert E. Lee, who was a close friend. Buckingham served as assistant adjutant general, commissary general, and adjutant general of Ohio. He later was attached to the War Department and was the officer who carried the message to Gen. George B. McClellan relieving him from command of the Army of the Potomac. Photo by Andy Turner
