First Shot marker at Gettysburg. Located west of town on Route 30 (the Chambersburg Pike), the marker locates the spot where Lt. Marcellus Jones borrowed a carbine from Sgt. Levi Shafer and fired a shot at a Confederate horseman in the distance. It is credited with being the first shot of the battle. The monument was purchased and place by Jones, Shafer, and Lt. Alex M. Riddler of the 8th Illinois in 1886. Photo by Andy Turner
